After Jesus told them all the bad news, He began to comfort them in chapter 14. He tells them, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me." No matter how bad things may look, they were to keep their faith and trust in God and Jesus. He added that His Father's house had more than enough room for them so they could rest knowing, when the time came, they would have a place to go and be with the Lord. Jesus referred to the time when all His people would leave the earth and go to Him by telling them He would come back for them so they would be with Him forever.
Jesus also said that they would know the way to where He was going. Jesus had taught them how to get to heaven during His entire ministry. Thomas responded by saying they had no idea where Jesus was going let alone how to get there. This shed light on the fact that the disciples were confused about that promise. Jesus was and is the way and He once again helped them understand by saying, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him."
Phillip asked Jesus to show them the Father. Doing so would satisfy their need so they could believe. Jesus commented that He had been with them all these years and they still didn't grasp who He was. He again taught them, if they had seen Jesus, all His teachings, miracles, behaviors and interactions with people, then they also would have seen the Father. Earlier in John, Jesus told them the things He does come from the Father so they should understand that what they saw in Jesus came from the Father and in fact demonstrate who the Father is. Seeing Jesus would actually be seeing the Father. Here again in chapter 14 Jesus teaches them, "Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does His work through me. Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me." Jesus said that if they couldn't believe this just by faith at least they should be able to believe and understand this by witnessing all the work He had done. The work Jesus did should be more than enough for them to believe.
Jesus spoke to them saying anyone who believes in Him could do the same works He has done and even greater works. (Jesus had changed how people lived and treated one another. He taught new principles, Godly principles. His teachings and principles changed people, towns, and cities. Believers could continue these things and change the world.) Jesus went on telling them He would be with the Father and could ask for anything in His name and He will do it. Here is a big word, "SO" the Son could bring glory to the Father. What I believe He is telling them is if they ask for things that will help the Son bring glory to the Father, He would do it. Requests made for that purpose would be heard and acted upon. Jesus is not offering that same help to things outside that category of requests. Jesus had one mission on earth and that was to glorify the Father by all He did. Jesus' offer of salvation by faith in Him glorified the Father for it was the Father who sent Jesus here to bring that plan.
Jesus said, "If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you." His instruction was love Him "AND" He would ask the Father to give the Holy Spirit to those who do. The Holy Spirit would not go through a ministry like Jesus had resulting in his leaving them. The Holy Spirit would be with them and lead them into the truth, and be their guide. Those who didn't believe in Jesus and love Him would not receive the Holy Spirit. Those who do not believe wouldn't even be looking for him and even if they found him, wouldn't recognize him. He encouraged them by telling them they knew him because he has been with them during their time with Jesus. Not only has he been with them, the Holy Spirit would soon dwell in them.
Jesus promised to not abandon them like orphans for He would come to them. He went on to tell them that the world would no longer see Him but that they would see Him. He would not show Himself to the world but to them again. (I believe meaning following His resurrection. (Chapter 20) Jesus told them, "Since I live, you also will live." Jesus will leave them but will live again and because of this they also will live on. He encouraged them by telling them that when He is raised to life (after His death) they would see the truth of His teachings and they would "know" He is in the Father and they are in Him. He promised He would love those who love Him and accept His teaching. For them to show they love Him, they are to love Him and obey His teaching. Because they do this and love Him, His Father will also love them.
Judas, not the one who would betray Jesus, asked Him why He would only reveal Himself to them and not to the world. Jesus addressed that question by talking about two groups of people, those who love Him and those who don't. He said that those who love Him will obey His teachings and do what He taught. Love is what motivates those who love Jesus to follow His teachings. By doing that, His Father will love them and they will come and make their home with them. However, anyone that doesn't love Jesus will, of course, not obey Him. For those who do not love Him, the Father, and Jesus will not be among them. He pointed out that those who don't love and obey Him also rebel against the Father because, as He reminded them, His words are not His own but come from His Father.
Jesus said He was telling them all those things while He was still among them. When the Father sends the Advocate (the Holy Spirit) he will be Jesus' representative. The Holy Spirit will teach them things and remind them of the words Jesus had been telling them.
Jesus again encourages them by telling them He is leaving them with a gift, the gift of peace of mind and peace of heart. This peace is beyond any worldly peace. He encourages them to rest in that peace and not to be troubled or afraid of what is soon to come. He reminded them He was leaving them but would return. Jesus went on to say, if they really loved Him, they would be happy that He is going to the Father who is greater than He. He closes that line of teaching by telling them He told them those things so when all the things He talked of happen, they would believe and realize Jesus has spoken the truth through His entire ministry.
Jesus then told them, He had little time left to talk because the ruler of this world (Satan) was approaching. Jesus makes it very clear that Satan has no power over Him. This tells us that Satan does none of this to Jesus out of his power or strength over Jesus. Jesus rather submitted to the deeds of Satan to fulfill what the Father requires of Him to save mankind. By Jesus giving of Himself in such a way, the world will know that He loves the Father and we should see just how great Jesus' love is for the Father. Jesus last words in chapter 14 are, "Come, let's be going." During this time, they had been gathered in the upper room. Jesus was now ready to go on to the Garden of Gethsemane. The garden was on the Mount of Olives.
