Once they all landed they found out they were on the island of Malta. It was a cold and rainy day but the people of Malta were very kind and built a large fire for them. Paul helped by gathering an armful of sticks and laid them on the fire. As he did, a poisonous snake was driven out of the sticks by the heat and bit him on the hand. As he pulled his hand away the snake dangled from his hand. The people saw this and said he must be a murderer. He may have escaped the sea but justice would prevail through the snake. Paul shook the snake off into the fire and appeared unharmed. The people watched for a long time waiting for Paul to swell up and drop dead. After some time had passed, Paul was surely unharmed and the people thought he must be a god.
Near the place they landed, there was an estate belonging to a man named Publius who was the chief official of the land. He also welcomed them and treated then kindly for three days. Publius's father was ill with a fever and dysentery. Paul went to him, prayed for him and laid his hands on him and he was healed. After that, the word spread regarding what Paul had done and all the other sick people on the island came to Paul and were healed. As a result they were showered with honors and were given everything they needed to continue their journey.
Three months after they shipwrecked, the set sail on another ship that had wintered at Malta. They sailed to Syracuse and stayed there 3 days, then on to Rhegium when a south wind kicked up. So they waited until the next day and set sail again to Puteoli and spent a week there with some believers. And so they came to Rome.
The brothers and sisters in Rome heard they were coming ands came to meet them at the Forum on the Appian way. Others met them at The Three Taverns. (I researched the locations of both the Three Taverns and the Forum at Appius and I found many varying distances anywhere from 10 miles from Rome to 50 miles from Rome. Some maps show The Forum closer to Rome than the Three Taverns and others show it farther from Rome. The only thing I feel comfortable saying is that both the Forum and the Three Taverns are south of Rome and that the Three Taverns was a place many travelers stopped.)
When the group got to Rome, the Romans permitted Paul to have private lodging but was closely guarded by a soldier. Three days after he arrived in Rome, Paul called the local Jewish leaders together and spoke to them. He told them he was arrested in Jerusalem and given to the Romans even though he had done no wrong. He talked about how the Romans had tried him and wanted to release him because they found he had done nothing deserving the death sentence. However, the Jewish leaders protested against the Roman decision forcing him to appeal to Caesar. He did so even though he had no desire to press charges against his own people, the Jewish leaders.
He explained he called them together so they could get to know each other and so he could explain that he is a prisoner not because he was guilty of anything wrong but because he believed the hope of Israel - the Messiah - has already come. (whereas the Jewish priests and leaders were still waiting for the coming Messiah believing he has not yet come).
Those gathered told Paul they had not received any letters from Judea or reports against him. They were interested hearing what he had to say about the Messiah because that belief (movement) was condemned by everyone. Paul set a day for a large crowd to gather where he was being held. Paul told them about the Kingdom of God and Jesus and tried to persuade them the Jesus was the promised Messiah using the Scriptures and the Law of Moses and the books of the prophets. He spoke to them from morning to evening. Some believed and others rejected what he said. They argued back and forth a while and Paul ended the session by saying, "The Hoy Spirit was right when He said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet; "Go and say to this people: When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend. For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes-so their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them." So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it."
Paul stayed in Rome and lived at his own expense for the next two years. He welcomed all who came to visit him and boldly proclaimed the Kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ to all and no one ever tried to stop him.
(God had a plan for Paul to spread the news about Jesus and the plan of salvation. God created a path for Paul to accomplish what he had been charged with no matter how hard others tried to stop him. Paul survived much persecution and many years of imprisonment but never faltered. God's message was heard by many people in many locations whether believer, unbeliever, Gentile, Jew or Roman. After all the persecution, Paul enjoyed a time of peace while he continued teaching of Jesus.)
